About Michelle – Founder

My name is Michelle and I’m the founder of UK Grammar. UK Grammar has been created to cater to those individuals wishing to focus specifically on British grammar.

Why UK Grammar came about:

I have been teaching English language and grammar for over twenty years. Languages and grammar have always fascinated me and I still gain great pleasure from learning and studying both more of the endless intricacies of English as well as other world languages. Because my talents always lay in this area, this was the natural direction for my university degree and career choice. However, with the advent and growth of the internet, I have noticed students becoming increasingly confused about what correct standard British English is. English is used somewhat differently the world over and accuracy can be elusive when one does not know where to look for guidance.

The goal of UK Grammar

Whether you are a British student working towards your GCSEs and A levels or a university degree, a UK-based adult looking for advice on the effective use of English for your day-to-day career, or a foreign student of English attempting to master the language for your own personal goals, it is important to observe the style appropriate to your audience to be seen as proficient, educated and correct. There is frequently a lack of consistency in following either US or UK grammar and rather a mixture of the two often presents itself.

No one standard is better than any other, and for the greatest part there is much overlap between most standard Englishes, but UK Grammar exists to guide you with clarity in standard British English if that is the standard you wish to observe.

UK Grammar aims to find a balance in teaching you all you need to know, without overburdening you with postgraduate level detail, yet not treating you as a beginner. The internet has suitable resources for students of every level and I sincerely hope that, for those of you who have passed the beginning stages of learning the language, UK Grammar will deepen your linguistic understanding and that you will enjoy these more detailed explanations and pick up a few interesting historical facts along the way.

The aim of UK Grammar is to help you perfect your English, whether for writing or speaking, so that you will ultimately know how to implement the most advanced forms of grammar correctly, and with understanding, as well as have confidence in your use of punctuation and in how to write academically. Alongside that, its goal is to help you know the fundamental differences between Englishes and what correct British English is, so that you are able to recognise relevant differences and consistently make the right language choices.

This site is growing and educative posts and quizzes for consolidating your knowledge are being added regularly. Many areas of interest have yet to be covered, so please feel free to get in touch with me if you have any questions, suggestions or comments.

To your success,

Michelle
